Hard-working, yet continually in trouble with his superior officers as a result of his impetuous, hot-headed nature and less than orthodox methods, Tim continually frets over his problematic career and wife Gloria's debilitating kidney disease.

While admired by his fellow officers, he often ignores team-work protocol, striking out impulsively on his own to question suspects or bring about an arrest. His supervisor, Inspector Errol Fields, considers Tim headstrong and unruly and continually threatens him with release from the Force. Nevertheless, Murphy has a knack for solving difficult criminal investigations and saving the day just when it looks like he is on his way to civvy-street.
